Early corona season end for the Swiss Drone League

Unfortunately, due to the Corona situation, the Swiss Drone League (SDL) has to cancel the last race of the season in Zurich. At least 3 regular season races were able to take place thanks to a newly organized replacement race in September. This year the founders were allowed to hold the official Swiss Championship for drone races for the first time. This is why it’s a pity that the season had to be shortened due to Covid-19. None-the-less The anticipation for the season in 2021 is even bigger now.

Optimistic despite setbacks

In this year marked by Corona, the effort was greater, the coverage lower and the number of participants smaller. But thanks to a high level of additional expenditure, the founders of the Swiss Drone League were also able to celebrate positive successes. In addition to the nomination for the XAVER Award as “Best Public Event”, the record for the world’s highest drone race in 2020 was set at the Swiss Digital Day in St. Moritz. The winner at the highest SDL level so far is Michael “Swift” Isler.

Continued existence secured thanks to sponsors

In particular, the Main Partners from the very beginning, Helvetia, Hörmann and Toshiba, have made a strong commitment to the continued existence of the Swiss Drone League. As with the classic sports, it was a difficult year for drone racing. This is why the support of the sponsors is all the more pleasing. Our thanks also go to all the other SDL partners, who have stood by us even in difficult times.

A unifying sport with a teenager as the new Swiss champion

Drone racing combines esports with physical racing. This also connects the generations of the target groups: The youngest pilot is 14 years old and the oldest active pilot is 54 years old. Female pilots can also be found among the participants.

The 14 year old Marvin “Marv_FPV” Schäpper has secured 1st place in each of the 3 season races of SDL and thus becomes the official Swiss champion! 2nd place went to Timothy “TempleClause” Trowbridge and right behind him Florian “FloFVP” Gluszka became third.

Spectacular season review and the 2021 outlook already in the pipeline

On 10, 12 and 19 December 2020, BLUE ZOOM will show the spectacular season review, including making-of and interviews, on TV. Viewers can also look forward to a look into the future in the upcoming programme. “It is a great pleasure, especially in spite of the setbacks, that thanks to reliable helpers, great partners and the right attitude, we can continue to make this sport of the future accessible to the general public,” says Joris Zahnd, co-founder of the Swiss Drone League.
